Experiences from Kurnool District                              Back

A case study on Dry land Horticulture with multiple crops by a marginal farmer

Musapeta village is 10 km away to Midthur (m) of Kurnool distrit. About 148 families are living in the village. The farmers are depending upon on rain fed irrigation. The total extent of this village is 1250 acrs, out of that 800 acres are under cultivation and remaining 450 acres is a fallow land. Out of 800acrs, 120 acres is irrigated through bore wells. Due to recurrent drought many of the farmers put their lands as fallow lands. The Bakar saheb and Akbar saheb are also comes under that category.

In this situation APRLP has entered into that village during the year 2001-2002. Bakar saheb is having 1.50 acres of land (fallow land) in Puppuvagu watershed area. He is having knowledge on Horticulture cultivation, and then he approached the PIA towards mango grafts to take up plantation in his land. In that process he received Rs.4, 000/- towards pits, mango grafts and for watering upto 6 moths (in summer season). The farmer has planted 60 Mango grafts in his land. Because of plantation the land became cultivable land. Simultaneously, he has undertaken groundnut cultivation as intra crop. He got yield 7.5 bags in his land. Prior to this he used to get 3 to 4 bags only. Increase in yields due to soil and moisture conservation activities. In this process Mr.Bakar saheb gained twin benefits, one is yield increase in ground nut crop; another is rising of mango plants.
