ILLUMINATED LIVES WITH THE SUPPORT OF APRLP      

          Tippa Talamari is a remote village of Devarakonda Mandal, Kurnool District.   It is a tiny village of 40 families which are depending on agriculture.  Smt. Boya Lakshmi and her husband Sri Kasanna, with their two children are living in the village. Their main livelihood is labour work.

          Smt. Boya Lakshmi, is a member in “PEDDAMMA SELF HELP GROUP” of Tippa Talamari village and actively participating in SHG activities. With the influence of health camps in the village on Family Welfare and its importance, she got motivated and underwent Tubectomy Operation as a model to other persons in the village. She is also propagating the importance of Family Welfare among other members of the SHG with two children norm.  For her credit, she could motivate 5 members to undergo Tubectomy operation.

          Since, Smt. Boya Lakshmi is poor and her livelihood is on labour work, she thought of earning of additional income by procuring power sprayer (Pesticides) to engage her husband.  Hence, she took the loan of Rs. 5,000/- from Revolving Fund of APRLP in her SHG and purchased the Power Sprayer and engaged her husband. Now her husband, Sri Kasanna is spraying 8 acres  per day and earning Rs. 400/- @ Rs. 50/- per acre.   After deducting expenses  of the family is getting net income of Rs. 150/- per day.   From his income, partly repaying the loan and educating their children and living happily with small family norm.

LIFE’ TURNING THROUGH INSTALLATION OF TINY FLOUR MILL

           M.K. Kottala is a village, 15 Km away from Devarakonda Mandal of Kurnool district.  Entire village is with Muslim (Minority) Community.   Hence, as a tradition the Muslim ladies may not go outside their residences for  employment.  In this context, the local organization (NGO), “RIDES” has introduced the Programme Enterprises under support of APRLP. 

          Smt. Qhvaja Bee, “a member in the SHG, took loan of Rs. 10,000/- from APRLP – Revolving Fund through her SHG and established a “Flour Mill” which is a dire need not only with in the village but also surrounding villages.  After installation of Floor Mill, Smt. Qhvaja Bee is earning an amount of Rs. 50/- per day as an additional income. They are educating their two children and nourishing with nutritious food and leading balanced life.   She is also repaying the loan amount to SHG regularly.   In this way, Smt. Qhvaja Bee became an exemplary to other members of SHG in the village.

ONCE LABOURER BECAME A TINY BUSINESS WOMEN

Devarakonda is a Mandal headquarters situated 70 Km away from district head quarters, Kurnool.   Smt. Ramulamma, 45 years poor women, with her 4 sons and one daughter is living in Devarakonda.   Her husband expired with Tuberculosis.  Hence, Smt. Ramulamma has been continuing her labour work as her family livelihood.

          With the help of “RIDES” – A social organization, under APRLP support,              Smt. Ramulamma, formed a group by pooling some more poor women.  She has taken responsibility to organize the group activities sincerely.  Added to that she got delighted that after hearing in the training programme that single headed persons like her will be given support families through APRLP.  Further, she also mobilized women of her kind and enrolled their names in the SHG. 

          As per their action plan the SHG got revolving fund from the DWMA.  As per choice of Smt.Ramulamma, she got RF support of Rs. 5000/-.  With her past experience of running chicken centre, Smt. Ramulamma has established chicken centre.

          Added to that not much competition for running chicken center, hence,  there is a great demand for chicken in Devarakonda and especially more demand for chicken on every Wednesday as it is a market day. Similarly, during Sundays usually business is more.  Approximately her income is increased upto Rs. 100/- per day, which amounts to Rs. 3,000/- per month.

          With the earnings of her business she performed marriages of her daughters.    Now, she is leading a peaceful life.   For her courage, firmness and commitment has become an exemplary to other in the village.

Ram Lambs rearing is a livelihood intervention: A case study

Smt. Magnamma belongs to one of the poorest of the poor families in Ternekal village, Devanakonda Mandal. She is a member in Ushodaya Self Help Group of Ternekal Grama Ikya Sangam.

Mangamma and her husband were leading miserable life with 5 children and depending upon agriculture wages in which they could earn 150 person days @ Rs.20/- per day and the remaining 6 months they used to migrate to Bombay for livelihood. Even at Bombay, Mangamma's family faced many problems.

In the year 2001, Ternekal village was selected for APRLP interventions. During the course of project interventions, it has undertaken several trainings and exposures visits to SHG and VO under social mobilization component. During the process, Mangamma got awareness about her living condition and decided to start Income Generation Activity to support their wages.

She began her earning by purchasing two ram lambs with the support of bank (Rs.2000/-). After 6 months she got profit of Rs.1000/- by selling both the lambs. It gave her confidence to enhance more ram lambs. In between VO released the assistance of Rs.10,000/- towards buying of lambs to Mangamma. Now she owns 13 ram lambs.

In addition to this she is able to motivate other members of the SHG/VO to undertake livelihood activities in support their families. She says "these SHGs are big support to our POP families".

A Tiny Enterprise by a POP family:

Bhagyamma is a native of Chinnahothur village, Aspari Mandal, who belongs to poorest of the poor family. She has to feed physically handicapped husband and 4 children. Due to contiguous drought they decided to migrate to Bellery in Karnataka state for wage labour. At this situation, APRLP interventions started in the village and Bhagyamma became the member in the SHG followed by VO.

As part of Livelihood intervention plan, Bhagyamma opted to start Saree business to support her family. Bhagyamma got Rs.10000/- loan from the VO. Immediately she went to Adoni and purchased Sarees from a wholesale shop. She sold all the Sarees and got Rs.12000/- business. Out of this Rs.700/- is the net profit in the same month. She also stated repayment to VO.

Changed living standards by doing twin business - A livelihood intervention

Bhagyamma is a native of Ternekal Village in Devanakonda Mandal. She belongs to landless and poor doing labour work. She is having 4 children. In this situation APRLP intervention took place and became the member of SHG. Due to virtue of become SHG member, the bank supported Rs.2000/- for doing leather business. It was hard to run the business with small loan and decided to discontinue the business.

At this juncture VO members discussed about her business and sanctioned Rs.8000/-as loan to continue the business. Then she got confidence and encouraged her spouse to continue the same business with more care. By doing the same they got good profit this time on leather business. Added to that they started doing cattle resale business. By doing both the business they are earning Rs.6000/- per month. Now she started repayment of loans. The livelihood options delighted their lives.

A successful changed family life by doing tiny enterprise:

Smt. Laxmi is one of the Poorest of the Poor families of Ternekal village, Devanakonda Mandal, Kurnool District.

Smt. Laxmi has 3 children and having 1.5 acres of dry land. Laxmi's husband is addicted to alcoholic. In this situation Smt. Laxmi came to know the importance of become the member in the local Self Help Group. The she approached Sri Vijay laxmi SHG and became the members. But her husband and aunt were discouraged to for taking membership in the SHG. But she decided to continue in the group with the support of other members.

Knowing the situation of Laxmi, the SHG initially released an amount of Rs. 500/- to purchase 10 chicks and doing egg business. After 3 months she sold all 10 chicks and got lucrative income. By doing both the businesses she got confidence to live on doing egg business. It was observed by her husband and aunt. They to convinced and came forward to extend support to lakshmi.

Simultaneously both the couple are doing egg business and earning Rs.3000/- pm and leading happy life.

Both SHG and VO leaders appreciated Laxmi for her hard work and changed husband in sharing the family responsibilities.

Value addition to the existing unit: A success enterprise by a member of Village organisation

Machamanidoddi is a remote habitation village of 6 km away from mandal hq Yemmiganur and 76 kms away from the District Head quarters. This village is consisting of 217 families with population of 850 in which 480 men and 370 Women. This is a completed watershed village, where APRLP introduced Livelihood program. A Village organization has formed with 7 SHGs with 78 Women, in which 66 families are poor. Out of 7 SHGs, 5 SHGs got bank loans and 2 SHGs got DWCRA - Revolving fund from DRDA.

Sri Laxmi Podupu Laxmi Sangam is one of the SHGs of among 7 SHGs in the village. Smt. S.G Lalitha is one of the Poorest of the Poor women member of in Sri Laxmi Podupu Laxmi Sangam

Smt. Lalitha is a landless, 30 years aged and studied upto secondary school level (seventh standard). She is having two children. Smt.Laitha and her husband used to work in agricultural fields for daily wages up to two years back. She was motivated to join in SHG by the Livelihoods coordinator and now she is in a position to lead the SHG effectively. This was observed by the local rural bank and sanctioned bank loan of Rs. 10,000/- to the SHG. Then the VO members were discussed about the utility of the bank loan and procurement of a floor mill, which is immense need of the village. Then the members were convinced the Lalitha to procure and install the mill for the benefit of the village. Now she gets 50 Kgs of Jowar for crushing and getting Rs.100 per day. Now she got employment continuously and became a model to other women folk.

In this context, APRLP released Rs. 2,09,000/- as revolving fund to the Village Organization. Once again Lalithamma got an option of second loan by the SHG due her service in the village. Hence, she got second loan of Rs.8500/-. Simultaneously, she purchased another chilly powder unit and now she is getting Rs.120/- as an additional income per day. Now, Lalithamma's per day income is Rs.240/- as an average from operating both units.

Out of earnings she is able to give better education on her children, Rs.500/- saves in the Post Office; and payment of loan contribution Rs.1000/- month

No doubt she is the role model for others in promotion of enterprises and extending service to the VO members as well as entire village.
