Experiences from Anantapur District                                          Back

Self Help Intervention by Village Organisation - A case study of Mahila Mini Super Market

Situation before starting of the Super market: There is a remote village called Kothapet in Gooty mandal of Anantapur district. There were few SHGs in the village at the time of APRLP's entry into Kothapet village. The Project Implementing Agency (PIA) WCUSS took an initiative to organize the unorganized poor communities into SHGs. As of now 15 self-help groups / 225 members have enrolled in the Village Organisation (VO). Previously, the entire village used to go to Gooty for procurement of groceries. For this purpose all the families in that village are invariably loose their wages for a day in a week. Added to that they were cheated with higher prices due to ignorance of prevailing price in the market by the business men.
Initiation for Mahila Super Bazaar: The women members discussed this matter several times in their SHG meetings and represented to VO to find a solution to the problem. All the SHG/VO members have unanimously decided to open a super market and buy all the provisions from there. Also the VO members discussed the issue and asked its members to identify the suitable person to run the super market. In turn, the members have identified Mrs.S.Shereesha to run the market. In fact, VO sanctioned Rs.20,000/- as an initial investment to Mrs. S.Shereesha to establish the market. After establishment of the market she is earning Rs.1000/- per day as gross income and Rs.150/- net income. She became economically independent and model to other villagers. The collective effort of women became a model to other CBOs in the district.
Advantages: 1. People are able to save money and time. 2. One of the women got full time employment. 3. Women have brought the market to their door steps.
